The formal name is the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction. Article I of the Convention each party agrees to “never develop, produce, stockpile, or otherwise acquire or retain … microbial or other biological agents, or toxins whatever their origin or method of production, of types and in quantities that have no justification for prophylactic, protective or other peaceful purposes…”  Any State Party to the Convention that finds that another State is acting in breach of its obligations deriving from the provisions of the Convention may bring a complaint with the Security Council of the United Nations. Importantly, Each State Party to the Convention undertakes to cooperate in any investigation which the Security Council may initiate.

Entering into force in 1986, the Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident applies in the event of any accident involving facilities or activities of a State Party which a release of radioactive material occurs or is likely to occur and which has resulted in or may result in an international transboundary release that could be of radiological safety significance for another State. The facilities mentioned, are for example, any nuclear reactor, nuclear fuel, radioactive waste management facilities, and the transport and storage of nuclear fuel. Member States shall notify a party with, inter alia, the following data: the time, location, and nature of the nuclear accident, the facility involved, the established cause of the event, and results of environmental monitoring.

The Convention of Assistance in the Case of a Nuclear Accident or Radiological Emergency obligates State Parties to cooperate between themselves and with the International Atomic Energy Agency to facilitate prompt assistance in the event of a nuclear accident or radiological emergency to minimize its consequences and to protect life, property and the environment from the effects of radioactive releases. State Parties requesting assistance specify the scope and type of assistance required. Additionally, the Convention obligates the Agency to make available appropriate resources for this purpose, and transmitting the request to other States.
